This fresco (from the house of Sirico at Pompeii) reproduces the episode of the last book of Virgil's Aeneid: Aeneas armed and beside the little Ascanio (who dries his tears with his cloak) is operated on by the doctor Japix kneeling in front of him,
who tries to extract the arrowhead stuck in his thigh with a forceps or a scalpel. Venus flies to his aid holding, in her left hand,
a bunch of medicinal herbs picked on Mount Ida in Crete to soothe the wound. In the background, behind Aeneas,
there are two warriors who witness the scene.
